It is with great pleasure that Dr. Jeannine Villella and I nominate Dr. Shaheer Khan for the Rising Star award. Dr. Khan is a Medical Oncologist specializing in Melanoma and GU Medical Oncology, both in Manhattan and Long Island. He joined Northwell in 2023 from Columbia University. At Columbia, he worked closely with Dr. Richard Carvajal, who then left to join Northwell as the Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Medical Oncology. Of all the physicians Dr. Carvajal worked with, the first physician he pushed to recruit was Dr. Khan. After serving as faculty for only one year, Dr. Khan’s incredible insights as a medical oncologist, along with his ability to execute on a lofty research program vision, made him invaluable to the Cancer Institute. Recognizing a crucial need for a more robust framework to facilitate clinical trials and translational research, Dr. Khan proactively stepped forward to support this complex, system-level initiative. This wasn't merely optimizing an existing process; it was about designing and implementing entirely new systems from the ground up, requiring strategic foresight, intricate planning, and immense dedication beyond his substantial clinical duties. Through his efforts, our program continues to build and grow in order to bring cutting-edge therapies and diagnostic tools to our patients, dramatically accelerating our research capabilities and positioning us at the forefront of oncology innovation. This clearly demonstrates his capacity for significant professional growth and his willingness to take on monumental tasks for the greater good. Finally, when the Zuckerberg Cancer Center saw the departure of critical GU physicians, Dr. Khan stepped up and added additional clinic time to help accommodate the patient load. He did this while balancing his research work, and has become integral to the Long Island team. He makes an effort to pitch in, even when he’s not asked, and does his work with a smile. Dr. Khan exemplifies the demeanor and work ethic we strive to see in all our physicians. We are so lucky he is a part of Northwell’s Manhattan Cancer Program, and the sky is truly the limit for Dr. Khan’s potential and success with our team.
