When you think about leadership in our department, Dr. Abbas Husain is an absolute star that makes our residency and this department what it is today. Abbas has driven so many new initiatives in our department and helped grow our residency program and department to whole new heights. Dr. Husain was instrumental in creating the Medical Education Fellowship at Staten Island University Hospital and serves as the Fellowship Co-Director. Abbas was also instrumental in creating video content for education, has advanced simulation, and helped bring podcasting to SIUH. He also contributes new ideas to our conference schedule and is the driving force behind our website. The residency website contains multiple educational initiatives and highlights our several divisions. This includes our Sono in Staten Ultrasound videos, Only in Staten Podcast, Clinical Conundrums, Procedure Training, and Global Health Initiatives. He truly leads by example and shows everyone he comes in contact with the things that are possible in medicine. Outside of Staten Island, Abbas has shined with regional and national involvement in Emergency Medicine. At a regional level, Dr. Husain has significant involvement with the Board of Directors at New York ACEP and ALL NYC Emergency Medicine. He is also well known nationally with involvement in the CORD. Abbas was awarded the SIUH Unsung Hero award by the Emergency Medicine Residency Program due to his continued work behind the scenes fostering resident growth and opportunities. From a faculty perspective, Dr. Husain guides and mentorship both junior and senior faculty for promotion. He takes pride in making advancements in education and residency training at all levels. Abbas looks out for the wellness of all residents and faculty, taking a leadership role as the GME Ombudsperson and serving on the GME Physician Wellbeing Executive committee. There are several careers that have flourished under the mentorship of Dr. Husain, including our own Program Director and several Assistant Program Directors throughout New York city. Dr. Husain is responsible for the growth of our department and this fellowship and has helped make SIUH the premier place to pursue a career in medical education. Our medical education fellowship has advanced the academic performance of the department and Abbas took this task head on. He ensured our Med Ed fellows become leaders by completing the ACEP teaching fellowship, complete podcasting bootcamp, and become active in both regional and national organizations. The success of this fellowship has been illustrated in several lights, including several publications in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, book publications, a neonatal video grant, multiple national and regional presentations, and our fellow winning the NY ACEP best new speaker award.
