It is with great admiration that I nominate Dr. Margaret Andersen for the Truly Mentorship Award. She embodies all this honor represents—selflessness, compassion, collaboration, and a deep commitment to helping others reach their full potential. Through tireless teaching and guidance, she's shaping not only excellent physicians but also thoughtful, compassionate leaders. Before becoming Ambulatory Medical Director of the Northern Westchester Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Andersen served as a dedicated internal medicine physician whose clinical excellence and empathy earned her the trust and admiration of both patients and colleagues. In her current role, she continues to build on that foundation, inspiring others to practice with integrity, curiosity, and compassion. I have had the privilege of working closely with her and witnessing her extraordinary ability to lead with both intellect and heart. She challenges residents to think critically and creatively, approaching each patient with curiosity and empathy. Her mentorship extends beyond clinic—building community, fostering teamwork, and modeling professionalism and humility. She unites colleagues around a shared purpose, coaching others with genuine care and without expectation of recognition. Two residents she mentors speak of her influence with deep gratitude. Dr. Victoria Gilrane shares: “Dr. Andersen has been one of the most defining figures of my residency. She brings a rare blend of sharp clinical insight and genuine human warmth to everything she does. In the clinic, she pushes us to stretch our thinking — to question assumptions, to refine our differentials, and to see the patient as more than a diagnosis. She has this quiet way of making you realize you’re capable of more, simply because she expects it of you. What sets her apart, though, is how personally she shows up for her residents. She’s taken the time to talk me through the bigger questions — about career direction, about navigating medicine as a woman, about how to stay true to myself while growing in this field. Those conversations have shaped not only how I practice medicine, but how I carry myself within it. Her mentorship has been both grounding and expansive, and I feel genuinely lucky to have been guided by her.” Dr. Shree Kalapatapu echoes this sentiment: “Dr. Andersen is an exceptional clinician and mentor whose dedication to excellence shines through in every patient encounter and teaching moment. In clinic, she embodies thorough, compassionate care, approaching each patient with remarkable attention to detail and a deep commitment to understanding every nuance of their story. As my mentor, she has guided me through the vast world of internal medicine, helping me navigate specialty choices, shape my learning goals, and grow into a thoughtful, empowered future female physician. Her passion for teaching and her devotion to primary care continue to inspire others to pursue medicine with the same empathy, precision, and purpose that define her practice.” Dr. Andersen’s mentorship elevates colleagues and residents alike. She embodies togetherness—lifting others, nurturing confidence, and fostering excellence through compassion. For these reasons and many more, I nominate Dr. Andersen for the Truly Mentorship Award.
