Dr. Hassan’s mentorship is unparalleled and we are truly lucky to have her in our department. She not only delivers her own high-quality presentations, but ensures our residents are prepared, confident, and successful on larger stages. She devotes endless hours to editing abstracts, coaching presentations, and supporting residents in competitions such as EMRA Quiz Show and regional and national SIMwars, where our team has excelled under her guidance. You can find her in the front row at any of these events; she is their fiercest advocate and most reliable supporter for the Staten Island EM residency program. It is no surprise that she has won the “SIUH Resident Advocacy Award” at our resident graduation two years in a row. As Conference APD, Dr. Hassan plays a central role in board preparation and resident success. She develops individualized study plans, many of which have led to significant gains in in-training exam scores. In addition to tailoring these plans for learning, she has designed innovative and engaging educational experiences by transforming the delivery of content at resident conference. One memorable example was our themed “Casino Day” conference, where gamification led the way and earned enthusiastic praise from residents and faculty. Her creativity and innovation also shine in digital scholarship. In 2022, Dr. Hassan launched the “Only in Staten” podcast, spotlighting interdepartmental collaboration and showcasing SIUH faculty. She went on to design a unique two-week medical student and resident elective in podcasting and digital scholarship, where learners create and publish their own podcast episodes-a pioneering approach to blending medical education with modern scholarship. Dr. Hassan’s impact extends far beyond the residency program. As Co-Chair of the Women in Medicine Executive Committee, Dr. Hassan has been a driving force behind hospital-wide diversity and inclusion initiatives. She spearheaded the beloved annual Cultural Night, now a cornerstone event celebrating the diverse backgrounds of our staff, and she created a Women in Medicine newsletter to highlight and amplify the accomplishments of female physicians across our institution. Her efforts were recognized with the Superwoman in Medicine Award, underscoring her leadership and commitment to advancing equity in medicine. Shorok is truly a rockstar and has helped developed several strong female leaders in our department. I could not imagine where we would be without her and her selfless dedication.
