Read more about this physician's nomination story*:
For over 15 years, Dr. George Zahrah served as Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Norwalk Hospital, where he built a highly evolved and subspecialized oncology program. Under his leadership, the team achieved exceptional clinical trial enrollment, fostered seamless multidisciplinary collaboration with surgical and radiation oncology colleagues, and advanced coordinated, patient-centered care. George also led the cancer genetics program across Nuvance Health, all while maintaining a robust clinical practice. In September 2024, the departure of the Chief of Oncology at Danbury Hospital created an urgent need for a visionary leader—someone capable of reshaping the culture among physicians, APPs, and nurses, with a renewed focus on quality, patient experience, and operational excellence. The challenge was steep: shifting entrenched practice styles from generalist to subspecialist care, and overcoming a prevailing mindset of “we’ve always done it this way.” While an external search was considered, George’s proven success at Norwalk and his ability to drive meaningful change made him the clear choice. He was appointed Regional Lead/Medical Director for the Connecticut market, expanding his leadership to include oversight of oncology programs at Danbury and New Milford Hospitals, in addition to his ongoing role at Norwalk. Soon after assuming this expanded role, the Danbury/New Milford team faced the sudden loss of a physician—22% of their workforce—placing immense pressure on the remaining clinicians. Despite this, George demonstrated unwavering professionalism, tenacity, and a tireless work ethic. He led the team through a period of profound stress, implementing critical changes in workflow and practice style while maintaining a sharp focus on quality and patient access. Simultaneously, George advanced the Cancer Institute’s system-wide goal of improving access to care, significantly reducing wait times for new patient visits. Even with ongoing staffing challenges, the Danbury group remained intact and delivered some of the highest levels of patient safety, quality, and access seen in years. Meanwhile, George continued to lead the Norwalk team through its own difficulties, including the departure of its sole hematologist and other key staff. Under his guidance, the Norwalk group sustained high performance and achieved near-immediate access for cancer patients. In summary, George Zahrah’s leadership was tested across multiple fronts during a time of extraordinary disruption. He never wavered in his commitment to excellence, and his ability to drive cultural and operational transformation has resulted in a stronger, more resilient cancer care program across the Connecticut market. His positive, solutions-oriented approach has inspired physicians, APPs, nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff alike—ensuring that patients receive superlative, timely care, even in the face of adversity.
