It was honestly difficult to choose a nomination category for Dr. Kumar, because she could easily be nominated in almost any of them. As a faculty member in our new Family Medicine Residency Program, Sandhya has already become an outstanding teacher and mentor for our residents. She brings a depth of knowledge, experience and insight that I find remarkable for her relatively short career. Both in her didactic and clinical teaching, she always works to take residents to the next level - not just with acquiring medical knowledge but also with increasing their skills in clinical reasoning, prioritization, and insight. In addition to her work with our Family Medicine residency, Dr. Kumar is a leader in providing quality healthcare for the homeless population, and in teaching students, residents, and fellows about the unique health care needs of this vulnerable population. She developed and directs the family medicine residency homeless healthcare track at Montefiore, oversees a Homeless Healthcare Elective, and directs the NYC Homeless Healthcare Fellowship. This gives her a unique perspective and skillset in modeling and teaching a culture of inclusion that values everyone's backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, and supports the growth of colleagues, team members, and trainees. Dr. Kumar brings this perspective of inclusiveness and shared decision making to every patient and resident encounter and will often highlight cultural perspectives that may not be readily apparent but ultimately enhance the equity and comprehensiveness of the care being provided to our patients. It is a pleasure working with Dr. Kumar, and the faculty, staff, and patients of the New Milford area are all benefiting from the culture of inclusiveness and equity that she helps to create.
