I truly believe there are people that come into your life for a reason. About 18 years ago, I started as a new nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. I had the absolute honor and privilege to work with incredible colleagues and physicians each and every day. I immediately respected and admired Dr. Kostas Sideridis, GI, for his skills, expertise, humanism, compassion and dynamic personality. I saw how he was with patients and families and was so inspired by his approach and bedside manner. It's definitely special. A few years later, a family member, suffered his first Crohn's flare and as a nurse, I did not hesitate in arranging Dr. Sideridis to be their GI doctor. I recall their first appointment with Dr. Sideridis where the family learned that Crohn's is chronic and requires close medical management. In the parking lot as we were sifting through all of the papers and prescriptions, my family member said, "Not going to lie, I'm totally overwhelmed but I trust Dr. Sideridis... he's seriously amazing." Over the past 12 years, Dr. Sideridis has been a true light in our life. He is kind, caring, always spends time thoroughly explaining procedures, medications and the disease processes. He leads with empathy and is exceptional at communicating information in a way that's personable, individualized and clear. More recently, my family member's Crohn's has required the next level of treatment and Dr. Sideridis has been guiding us every step of the way. He's always a call or email away. Dr. Sideridis embodies all of the Northwell values. Truly Compassionate - At our last appointment, I became a tearful and without missing a step, he ran to get tissues, gave me a hug and assured me that "we'll figure this out together." He says, "call me Kostas... we've known each other for years," which is the most kind gesture because he's right, Dr. Sideridis has become a consistent presence in our lives over the years. Truly Innovative - Dr. Sideridis is the top in his field and we have never doubted his competence and always finds the less invasive/extreme measure first. Truly Ambitious - Over the years, my family member has been weaned off many of the medications which is a testament to Dr. Sideridis and our partnership. He has said, "You're a young and active person with a mild case... let's take things slow and let your body heal." Truly Together - Dr. Sideridis is so highly regarded by his colleagues. He talks up his team and they do the same in return. He is also very collaborative with patients and families and we feel part of the decision-making process. Truly Inclusive - Dr. Sideridis makes everyone feel seen, heard, comfortable and important. He truly cares about his patients and their well-being and it shows in his every moment with those he cares for.
